Fortnite tweaks: what actually helps
Search for Fortnite tweaks and you’ll find packs of registry files and .bat scripts. Some help, some do nothing, and a few can break Windows. Here are the safe tweaks you can do yourself, the ones to skip, and how to get back if something goes wrong.
- Make a restore point before you change anything.
- Game Mode on, Best performance power mode, Game Bar recording off.
- Turn off startup apps you don’t need.
- Never turn off Windows Security for FPS.
- Don’t run tweak files you can’t read or undo.
Before you tweak: make a restore point
A restore point is a save of your Windows settings. If a tweak goes wrong, you can go back to it.
- Open the Start menu and search Create a restore point.
- On the System Protection tab, pick your C: drive. If it says Off, press Configure, choose Turn on system protection and press OK.
- Press Create, type a name like “before tweaks” and press Create again.
To go back later, open the same window and press System Restore.
Tweaks worth doing
1. Game Mode on
Settings > Gaming > Game Mode. It tells Windows to give your game priority and holds back things like driver installs while you play. It’s on by default on most PCs, but check.
2. The right power setting
Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode > Best performance. On a laptop, play plugged in. Power saving makes your processor slow to speed up, which you feel as drops and delay.
3. Xbox Game Bar recording off
Settings > Gaming > Captures, then turn off Record what happened. Background recording costs performance even if you never save a clip. Keep just one recorder if you use one.
4. Fewer apps in the background
- Turn off startup apps you don’t need in Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Uninstall apps your PC came with that you never use, in Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Close your browser and launchers before you play.
5. Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling (test it)
Find it in the default graphics settings under Settings > System > Display > Graphics. It helps some PCs and does nothing on others, so check your FPS with it on and off. It needs a restart each time.
6. Network adapter power saving off
Windows can switch your network adapter off to save power, which can cause drops, mostly on laptops and Wi-Fi.
- Right-click the Start button and open Device Manager.
- Open Network adapters and double-click the one you use.
- If it has a Power Management tab, untick Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
7. Refresh rate, driver and RAM speed
These aren’t really tweaks, but they’re where the biggest wins hide. Set your monitor to its highest refresh rate in Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. Get your graphics driver from NVIDIA, AMD or Intel. Check your RAM speed in Task Manager under Performance > Memory, and turn on XMP or EXPO in the BIOS if it’s running slow.
8. Fortnite’s own settings
The biggest tweak of all is inside the game: Rendering Mode: Performance, V-Sync off, and low Textures and Meshes. The settings guide lists every one.
9. High priority (small, and it resets)
With Fortnite running, open Task Manager, go to Details, right-click FortniteClient-Win64-Shipping.exe and choose Set priority > High. It can help a little on a busy PC, but Windows forgets it every time the game closes. Never pick Realtime: it can freeze your mouse and keyboard.
Tweaks to skip
- Turning off Windows Security or the firewall. It leaves your PC open to viruses for little or no FPS. Not worth it.
- Turning off Windows Update for good. You miss security fixes. Pause it for a week instead if it gets in the way.
- Tweak packs you can’t read or undo. A .bat or .reg file from Discord or YouTube can change hundreds of settings with no list of what it did and no way back.
- RAM cleaner apps. Windows already manages memory. Emptying it just means it has to load things again.
- Deleting system folders like Prefetch. Prefetch helps apps open faster. Clearing it makes them slower for a while.
- Making Fortnite’s settings file read-only. Fortnite then can’t save any setting you change in the game.
A good rule: if you can’t see exactly what a tweak changes, and you can’t undo it, don’t run it.
